The graphic design process can seem complicated at first. And it certainly can be! But with these quick tips from an expert graphic designer, even a beginning designer will be ready to start creating beautiful designs.
Tip 1: Clarity of assignment
One of the essential tips for any graphic designer is understanding the ultimate goal of the piece they are designing. Is it a flyer aiming at driving memberships at a new yoga studio? Is it a website landing page aimed at converting eCommerce customers? Is it a social media post intended to make a certain audience laugh or engage with the content?
Understanding what the piece is, the audience it is intended for, and the key messages / desired actions are all crucial components to a successful design. After all, how can you design something without understanding what it is trying to achieve?
Tip 2: Keep fonts simple
After you grasp the goal of your particular design project, you’re ready to move on to the actual design process. One of the first things to nail down is what fonts you will use. It’s essential to keep in mind that the most important thing about a font is that it is legible and readable. Sometimes this means keeping it simple and often means not choosing more than one or two complementary fonts for one project. While this doesn’t mean you should never use a fun, eye-catching font in the right environment, it’s advisable to keep it simple.
Tip 3: Use colors that pop
If your fonts are simple, colors are where you can make the piece pop. While you should always work within a brand’s color palette, if applicable, this is also your chance to be creative and make sure that your design is eye-catching. Keep in mind the feelings associated with different colors. Red, for example, is sometimes associated with anger or passion, and colors like orange and yellow can often symbolize warmth.
Tip 4: Don’t be afraid of white space (which isn’t always white)
Spacing, alignment, and overall layout of your piece are crucial components of any successful graphic design. You want to present your work in a smart way that flows well, draws attention to your key messages, and makes a visual statement. Ensuring that there is ample space between all of your elements — sometimes known as white space — is one tool graphic designers use to ensure attention to each component.
Tip 5: Don’t be afraid of criticism
Always keep in mind that graphic design is subjective! You might love your piece, but someone else might take issue with a font or color choice. Be open to other opinions and always be learning from other designers! It will only make you a better designer in the long run!
